California State University, San Bernardino
The CSU Early Start Program
Revised: June 6, 2014

CSUSB Early Start Details

The Early Start Program is a requirement of the California State University (CSU) system designed to ensure that incoming freshman who have not demonstrated readiness for college level English and mathematics through the English Placement Test (EPT) and Entry Level Math (ELM) or one of the acceptable waivers, participate in programs or courses that help them make progress in the summer before their freshman year.

Each campus in the CSU system is required to offer options for students to meet the Early Start Program requirement. If you are an incoming freshman, and you plan to attend California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) in the fall, our campus offers different programs for mathematics based on your ELM score and one option for English.

Before you explore the programs and courses offered at CSUSB, you must complete the following steps.

  1. Figure out if you are required to take the ELM and/or EPT by contacting the testing office at 909-537-5045 or emailing testing@csusb.edu.

  2. If you are required to complete the ELM or EPT, register for the exams online through the Educational Testing Service website.

  3. Prepare for the exams in advance. Your scores on the ELM and/or EPT can have a big impact on the number of courses that you are required to take at CSUSB and your ability to register for courses that you need to take in order to graduate. There are study guides available online for English (PDF Study Guide) and Math (PDF Study Guide). Do not wait until the last minute. Our campus is counting on you to do your best on these exams so that you can be placed in the appropriate mathematics course.

  4. Once you have your ELM score, visit our Early Start Pathfinder to figure our which math program you must complete. If you would like to read more about the program details, visit our Early Start program options page.

  5. Register for your Early Start math and/or English course as soon as possible. Registration for Early Start is a multi- step process. You must first select the campus where you plan to complete Early Start, then you must enroll in your Early Start courses. For instructions on how to select your campus and enroll in your course, visit our Early Start sign up and enrollment page.

If you have any questions regarding the Early Start Program, please contact the California State University, San Bernardino Early Start Call Center at (909) 537-5260, or email us at earlystartprogram@csusb.edu.

The Early Start Program at CSUSB was intentionally designed to deliver instruction that will help you advance through courses that affect your ability to graduate on time. Because we know how beneficial starting this work early is for you, we strictly enforce this requirement. If you have an extenuating circumstance, you may apply for a waiver from the requirement. However, you should be advised that waivers are granted on a case-by-case basis after being reviewed by a committee and generally are only granted in extreme circumstances for which you can provide documentation. If you have questions regarding our Early Start Program waiver, or would like to request the waiver form, send an email to earlystartprogram@csusb.edu. All waiver requests must be submitted for consideration by June 6, 2014.
